I was helping my niece paint a place she was moving into, and the tenants at the time hadn’t moved out yet. A small, skinny dog was chained to a tree in the yard. For three days, I watched that dog beg for attention. I am not a dog person. However, I simply had to say hello to her. She is dusty and dirty. It was 90 degrees that week.

However, what grabbed my heart was when I looked into her eyes. I saw a little spirit saying, “Please help me.” No food. Green slime for water. No toys. No bed. There’s really nothing but dirt under a tree and a barren doghouse. In the end I decided I simply couldn’t leave her there! My niece offered the guy $50 and he couldn’t get the money fast enough! She went home with me that day. 18 pounds, head wider than rib cage. Ribs and backbone exposed!

She is an angel in disguise. She is now my service dog. My constant companion. And at 34 pounds, is her ideal weight. Underneath the dust was a beautiful brindle coat. And still the gorgeous expressive eyes and goofy ears!

I have many stories about our journey up to this point. Recently, she used her anxiety training skills and located a kid surfing on Myrtle Beach. Turns out she couldn’t find her mother. I took the girl to my hotel office and her mother was staying. NINETEEN block it! My little Heidi did it!

It’s been almost five years now. She is still my angel. She loves everyone she meets. I sometimes call her “everyone’s dog” who happens to live with me. Thinking about this girl looking at everyone from the chain still attached to that tree, and wanting nothing more than to be with them still breaks my heart sometimes.

Sometimes prayers you didn’t even know needed to be answered are answered, and Heidi is the answer to my prayers!
