The new doomsday plane will allow the US government to survive in the event of a nuclear fire

You may have heard about it The famous “Doomsday” planeto keep the government running even as our world was destroyed by nuclear hell since the early 1970s. Well, now it looks like we’re getting a second generation of $13 billion airplanes. Who knows, maybe Cold War will eventually become hot.

Sierra Nevada Corporation was awarded the major contract by United States Air Force to build a successor to the E-4B Nightwatch doomsday Plane. Sadly, that is not its “real” name – it would actually be called the “Survival Airborne Operations Center” or SAOC. SAOC construction will be performed in Colorado, Nevada and Ohio. CPR News. The project is expected to be completed by 2036, therefore Air Force will just need the world to hold itself together 12 more years.

Basically what Sierra Nevada Corporation would do is use a regular commercial jet (possibly a 747-8i, but nothing has been confirmed yet) and then militarize it to meet Air Forcerequest of.

Here’s a little insight into E-4B’s backstory and purpose, according to Reuters:

Although commonly used to transport the US Secretary of Defense, the E-4B is designed as a mobile command station capable of withstanding nuclear explosions and electromagnetic effects, allowing leaders to American leaders order the military in times of national emergency.

The E-4B is also capable of mid-air refueling and has state-of-the-art meeting rooms, meeting rooms and communications equipment.

The Air Force currently operates four E-4B aircraft with at least one on alert. The heavily modified Boeing 747-200 jumbo jet fleet is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain as parts become obsolete.

The current E-4B is expected to reach the end of its useful life in the early 2030s, just in time for the new aircraft to be ready for operations. It’s funny how it works.
