Why do you love photography?

It’s #TravelTuesday and I, Dave Williams, are always here. This week, I am writing to you from Lofoten in northern Norway. I’m on a mission to capture the northern lights while I’m here, among other things, and so far it’s been going pretty well. I had to shelter for a few days because of a polar storm, but as soon as it dissipated I was met with a solar storm. Perfect time!

This week, I want to spark your mind and help you think about why you love photography. I know many of you will have photo-centric solutions for the New Year, so hopefully, this helps a bit.

This is where me and Erik the ‘rocket man’ Kuna in Germany photographed our waterfall at the right spot. We were both in the same position but ended up with different images, and this led to the problem of today’s post.

For me, photography is many things. One of those things, and perhaps the most important, is that I really enjoy showing the world the way I see it. I talked to Scott about this a few years ago and I told him that one thing that intrigued me was the phrase, ‘loan me your eyes and I’ll show you what I see. ‘ He said it literally made him think of poking someone’s eye, and I get that, but the subtext remains the same. It is a great power to communicate my vision through photography. I can wobble in a place and put my own spin on it, capture a moment of time and place in space, and from shooting to editing, I can do it. It is a combination of reportage and art.

So what is it for you? What do you like about photography? There’s something to think about today as 2022 begins. With the knowledge of what photography you like, build some goals and go out there and achieve them!

Lots of love

Dave
