On March 6, 2021, San Diego Humane Society Law Enforcement rescued two dogs from a home in Mira Mesa, California. Their hind feet were bandaged too tightly, the bleeding was severed. The dogs’ previous owners said it was to prevent them from licking and scratching, but both dogs ended up having their hind legs amputated.
Luckily, one of these poor baby mice, Chloe, 9-year-old Shih Tzu, will eventually find a family that understands her. Most of all, Chloe would put up with it all to finally be loved and happy.
Chloe’s Recovery
At the vet, Chloe had both of her hind legs amputated. After her surgery, humane social workers in Escondido helped teach Chloe to walk using a wheelchair and prosthetic limbs. Chloe is also custom equipped with orthopedic sandals for both hind legs.
Veterinarian Susan Garity, who helped Chloe recover, describes the lengthy process:
“Fitching a dog with a prosthetic is quite an involved process and this is a first for the Humane Society of San Diego. It includes sedation to mold the foot, make the prosthetic fit perfectly, and monitor pressure sores. It takes time for the dogs to learn how to use them, but our staff are dedicated and I am so grateful we have supported our entire organization in giving these sweet dogs a chance. second chance at some ordinary opportunity. ”
Roxy, the other dog rescued from the California home, is fine too fitted with new prosthetics. Since she has arthritis in her spine, her recovery will take a little longer. However, the Humane Society hopes that after another month in her foster home, Roxy will be ready for adoption.
After physical therapy and adjustment of her prostheses, Chloe went to a foster home to recuperate. It was fortunate that Officer Serena Boney knew the perfect foster family for her.
Someone can relate
Detective Chappie Hunter of the San Diego Police Department lost his leg in a car accident in 2013. A year later he returned to work with a prosthetic leg.
In regards to Chloe’s difficult journey on a personal level, Detective Hunter and his family fostered Chloe over a few weeks. Soon, they learned that they had to officially adopt her.
Announcing Chloe’s adoption on Facebook, Arlene noted in a comment how similar Chloe and Hunter’s spirits are.
“She was amazing, she only had her prosthetic for a few days and on the 2nd day at our house she jumped in a chair from the ground! Reminds me of Chappie after he had his arm amputated. He was working in the garage right after coming home from the hospital! Same fighting spirit! They are super cute together too! ”
As Hunter said: “We actually didn’t adopt her… She adopted us!”
A new life for a soul dog
With her new family, Chloe is running around once again despite her limitations. She has another canine sibling and is adjusting extremely well.
The San Diego Police Department described on Facebook how happy Chloe and her new family make each other.
“During her first two days at the family home, Chloe ate well, curled up in their lap and ran around wagging her tail. You can tell she is delighted to be in a loving home. “
Both overcome physical and emotional challenges, Chappie Hunter and Chloe were destined to be together.
