Racehorse Summit Welfare, Safety takes place on June 25


The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation announced today that it will host its 11th Horse Racing Safety and Welfare Summit on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The event will be co-hosted by the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition. Environment and Jockey Clubs.

The event will be free and open to the public from 9am to 5pm ET in the Longship Room at Kroger Field and will be livestreamed. Like the 2022 summit, Annise Montplaisir, equine education coordinator for the Kentucky Horse Education Project Foundation and president of Amplify Horse Racing, will host.

Summit topics include a presentation by Dr. Tim Parkin on the latest statistics from the Equine Trauma Database, work done by the state’s veterinarians, comedy harmonize pre-race inspection, track surfaces and other issues affecting horse safety. The full program and list of speakers will be announced soon.

Previous editions of the summit can be viewed on Grayson’s YouTube page and have received nearly 16,000 views. Among the major achievements that have grown out of the 10 previous summits are the Equine Injury Database; Jockey Injury Database; Track Surface Testing Laboratory; unified study guides and coach tests; White papers on track surfaces and publication of educational newsletters on track maintenance; publish statistics on stallion endurance; DVD Hoof: Inside and Out, available in English and Spanish; protocol for working horses off the veterinarian’s list; proposed regulations that would invalidate compensation claims for horses injured in racing; and severe weather protocols.

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has traditionally been the nation’s leading source of private funding for equine medical research to benefit all horse breeds.
