“There was no discussion,” Baltas said. “We’ve never tried him on dirt. He’s got a bit of a dirt pedigree, even though he looks like a grass horse. There’s a couple of good scratches there and it’s like, ‘ We have nothing to lose. We need to go.'”

When asked how short pitch affected results, Baltas suggested that Valdivia produced a winning attempt.

“Well, I’ve seen this horse dig before and Jose did a great job manipulating it in the back to help it relax,” the trainer said. “He raised his head a bit but he dug and he dug deep and it was a great win.”

Valdivia said the credit goes all the way, including to Bob and Jackie and his owners.

“He’s a little bit of a wait around,” he said. “But when the horse came up to him, he jumped in and tried to fight some more. But hello great team — Calvin for the shot. As he said, it was a short field ( with seven entries) and now it will be even shorter (after being scratched). So, why not?”
