Stellantis CEO thinks EV mandate will ‘kill’ the industry
Jurisdictions worldwide To be impose EV mandateregulate ICE vehicles stop production and sale. This is probably a necessary step to prevent us all from drowned in our house, but ICE car sellers are not happy about that. Case in point: Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, spoke to a group of UK journalistsclaims the country’s electric vehicle regulations will “kill” the country’s auto industry.
Tavares seemed to understand part of the purpose of the mission – to destroy internal combustion vehicles – but there was a more interesting part to his words. I said car that the task itself isn’t a bad idea, but nonetheless it should be more relevant to how sales are going:
Speaking to UK journalists from Stellantis’ minivan plant at Ellesmere Port, Tavares agreed with the logic behind the notion, saying “I think the reality is they are imposing a [EV sales] makes sense” but added: “The issue is the extent and position of the ZEV mandate relative to the natural needs of the market.”
A task that does not exceed current market conditions is not really a functional or useful task. The point is to transform the industry, to change those market conditions, but that’s not the move automakers want. They want to continue building what sells Currentlyfor that sweet quarterly profit, instead of what to build will sell in the future.
If sales naturally exceed minimum levels set by regulators, those minimums do not need to be enforced. If organizations are willing lower their minimum level to meet the needs of corporations, those requirements may not actually exist. Matching tasks to market needs is a smart request from Tavares, because it’s the kind of business-speak that almost makes sense until you think about it — however, once you do, everything the whole thing will collapse.
