Chris Hau is a talented photographer and videographer — professional by all standards — but like all of us, he has his area of expertise. Jeffrey Larsen is a professional product cinematographer and commercial creator. In this video, Hau and Larsen create an ad for the same product to see the difference.
My expertise in professional videography is limited; I do some work in the area, but that’s not where my bread is buttered. In photography, like all of us, I have my areas of expertise and areas that I simply dive into. One of my specialties is particularly niche and so when I see photographers diving into that field, even professional photographers, I notice a lot of mistakes. Sometimes it helps to remind yourself how much of a difference spending time in-depth in an area of your interest can make a big difference. Hau’s ad is great – no doubt about it – but it’s not on the same level as Larsen’s in my opinion. This is not insulting Hau’s work, it simply emphasizes that spending your time on a genre or niche will be beneficial.
