How to Choose the Right Fill Light When Taking Portraits

Although we spend a lot of time talking about the choice of main light and how it is used in portraits, it is often not the only light source present in the image. Fill light makes a huge difference in the final look of your image and deserves as much attention as key. This great video tutorial will show you the internal and external characteristics of different fill lights and how they affect the final look of your portraits.

Coming to you from John Gres, this helpful video tutorial will show you the different types of additional lights for portrait photography and the different effects they will have on your final image. In portraits, the main light is almost always overhead, and this can create too dark and harsh shadows on certain parts of the subject’s face. The fill light complements the main light by reducing some of that harsh contrast by adding some light back into the shadow areas and softening them for a nicer overall effect. However, just like the main light, your choice of modifier for the secondary light will have an impact on the look it creates. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Gress.
