The release of Nikon Z8—“baby Z9”!—has received a lot of excitement in the photography world. We are sure very impressed with the Z9 as a tool for underwater shooters, so with very similar specs but a much smaller form factor and a much lower price tag, the Z8 could be a very attractive option for many. Unfortunately, some users have recently started reporting problems when mounting lenses on new cameras.

In a service announcement released in the United States, Japan, and Europe on June 23, Nikon wrote: “Users of the Z8 have informed us that in rare circumstances it is not possible mount the lens to the camera because the lens cannot be rotated to the locked position. position. Based on our investigation into the matter, it is clear that this problem can occur with the Z8 camera. We have identified a range of Z8 camera serial numbers that can be problematic and will resolve the issue as follows. Nikon will repair the affected Z8 camera at no cost to customers, including shipping the affected Z8 to Nikon, as well as returning it to the customer, even if the warranty has expired.”

Nikon is encouraging Z8 owners to enter their serial number Z8 service consulting website to see if their cameras are part of the affected batch. Nikon says that “instructions for requesting service, including getting your free return shipping label, will be displayed on screen” if your camera is affected. Otherwise, Nikon says, “you can continue to use your camera without worrying about this.”
