Chicago Cubs extend coach David Ross through the end of the 2024 MLB season

The Chicago Cubs has extended the contract with coach David Ross through the end of the 2024 MLB season, the team announced Friday.

The club has an option on Ross’ contract for the 2025 season. The Cubs did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Ross signed a three-year contract, with an option year, to replace Joe Maddon ahead of the 2020 season. The Cubs won that National League Central title but failed in the knockout stages. The team wasn’t so lucky in 2021, when a streak of 11 defeats in June changed the course of the season.

The team changed the star player Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez last season, leading to the collapse of the second half. The Cubs finished the season 71-91, giving Ross an overall record of 105-117 over two seasons.

Jed Hoyer, Chicago’s president of baseball operations, praised Ross’ work late last season.

“David has done an excellent job as a manager,” Hoyer said in October. “He’s learned a lot on the job. Even while studying, I think he’s been brilliant.”

Information from ESPN’s Jesse Rogers was used in this report.
