Lando Norris gets his long-awaited first victory at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix
Lando Norris is officially the winner of the Formula 1 race as he comes home to take the first checkered flag at Miami 2024 grand opening. The McLaren The rider celebrated with his signature champagne bottle boost, but this time from the top of the podium.
For a whole weekend dominated by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Norris’ speed around the Miami Autodrome on Sunday was a surprise and extremely exciting to watch. The race turned upside down when a crash between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant forced the deployment of a safety car. Norris was one of the last drivers not to make a pit stop at that time and was leading the race. He returned with four new, hard compound tires, remained in the lead and never looked back.
Max Verstappen stayed in second place and challenged Norris on the restart, but never got close enough for the rest of the race. Charles Leclerc took third place, just a few seconds behind Max.
Logan Sargeant was the only DNF on the day, as he was a victim of the incident with Magnussen. Lewis Hamilton finished in sixth place but was behind Sergio Perez (and quite happy about it) right at the end of the race. Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo’s magical weekend ended when his teammate Yuki Tsunoda passed him by a wide margin in the race, finishing seventh behind Ricciardo in 15th.
During a press conference with the media, Norris said it was an “unbelievable feeling” to stand on the top step of the podium. Norris said: “Just happy, I smile, this is not always the case, but sometimes I dream of these days and you never know when they will come for you, but today is that day”.
His closest competitors, Verstappen and Leclerc, were both delighted that Norris took his first win.
“I think it was a long time coming and I’m happy to be beaten by Lando today,” Verstappen said. “He definitely deserved it and was much faster in the end.”
“I’m really happy for Lando,” Leclerc began. “He needs to enjoy it as much as possible, and tonight is going to be a great night.”
On the subject of celebrations, when asked, Norris made it clear that celebrations must be orderly.
“I won’t sleep,” Norris laughed. “I’ll do my best. Tomorrow there might be more than just a scratch on my nose,” Norris said, referring to the injury to his nose while partying in Amsterdam last week.
