Commonwealth Games: FIH ‘sorry’ for clock howling during India’s semi-final loss
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Saturday apologized for the clock controversy that took place during the Indian women’s semi-final loss to Australia at the Commonwealth Games, saying it will “carefully look into” the case.
Australia’s Rosie Malone, who missed her first attempt in the penalty shootout, was given another chance as the second countdown on the scoreboard had not yet begun. The forward didn’t miss the second, giving her team the lead. The Indians ultimately lost the semi-final 0-3 in a penalty shootout after both teams drew 1-1 at the end of regulation time as the crowd booed the technical officials about the decision.
“During the semi-final of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games between Australia and India (Women), the penalty shootout started wrongly too early (the clock was not ready), we apologize.” The FIH said in a statement.
“The procedure that applies to such situations is that the penalty shootout has to be replayed, has been done. This incident will be scrutinized by the FIH to avoid any similar problems in the future,” the statement added.
