World Cup Daily: Argentina, Croatia pass dramatic day

Argentina will play in World Cup semi-final after defeat Netherlands in a penalty shootout on Friday – but it won’t have its day with Brazillost in the penalty shootout with Croatia.

Here’s everything that happened during the World Cup on Friday and what to watch on Saturday.

Croatia 1 (4), Brazil 1 (2)

It’s no surprise that Croatia won the shootout: They’ve won all four of the penalty shootouts they’ve participated in at the World Cup and have participated in five of the tournament’s last seven extra-time matches.

What’s even more surprising is that it beat Brazil, considered the strongest team in the tournament, to reach the quarterfinals. Even on Friday, Brazil looked to be the better team, beating Croatia 21-9 and winning xG 2.56 to 0.62.

Croatia had to score the latest goal in history (115:59) to equalize in the final moments of extra time.

Brazil played well – really, really well – but as the saying goes, sometimes luck is better than good, and so did Croatia after failing to reach the semi-finals in two consecutive World Cups.

Highlights of the Croatia-Brazil match

Croatia drew in the final minutes of extra time and then overcame Brazil on penalties to qualify for the semi-finals.

Argentina 2 (4), Netherlands 2 (3)

Argentina’s penalty shootout has a much happier ending, but it can be said for sure La Albiceleste would prefer to deal with everything in the regulations. And they will have, have Wout Weghorst not score in 11th minute of stoppage time (yes, you read that right). Weghorst also scored the goal to put the Netherlands in the net one goal.

Unfortunately for the Netherlands, they suffered the same fate in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals: losing to Argentina on penalties. Argentina have now won five of the six penalty shootouts they participate in at the World Cup, including two against the Netherlands.

Argentina will continue to face Croatia in the semi-finals on Tuesday (2pm ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app).
