Top 10 things dogs accidentally eat and what to do about them

Dogs are mischievous little demons who cause all sorts of trouble. Dogs that chew a lot and dogs with big appetites will eat things that can be toxic to them, whether it’s food or not. Other non-toxic items will not pass easily and may require surgery to remove. Here are some of the most common harmful items dogs consume and what to do when it happens.

#1 – Bones

Cooked bones can break into sharp pieces that can cut and damage the digestive tract. When swallowed whole, they can become a choking hazard. Some dogs can even swallow whole spinal bones. Large bones are at risk of obstruction. If you think your dog has swallowed a large bone that won’t survive, make an appointment to see your veterinarian. Vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating and discomfort, are signs that something is trapped inside that needs to be surgically removed.

#2 – All

Dogs love stinky socks and eating them can certainly be a great way to cause a clog. Keeping socks away from dogs and puppies is the best way to prevent swallowing socks. If you think your dog has eaten a sock, it’s best to make an appointment with your veterinarian. The longer a foreign body stays in the stomach or intestines as an obstruction, the more damage and death it can cause.

#3 – Balls

It is important that the ball you choose for your dog is large enough that they cannot swallow the ball whole. It’s best to make sure it can’t get past your child’s back molars, which can also pose a choking hazard. But if your dog has swallowed a ball whole, it’s best to take them to the vet right away. It is nearly impossible for a balloon to pass through the digestive tract on its own. Obstacles can be very dangerous.

#4 – Rock

Some dogs like to eat ice and they can also lead to gastrointestinal obstruction. Whether your dog eats a large rock or a few small rocks, be sure to contact your veterinarian for an abdominal X-ray. From the radiographs, your veterinarian can determine if they need stone removal surgery or if they will pass on their own.

#5 – Toys

Choosing the right toy for your dog is important, especially for heavy chewers. Any type of toy can be broken down into pieces that your dog can swallow, and not only can your dog choke on these pieces, but they can also cause a gastrointestinal blockage. If you think your dog has swallowed a toy, or especially an entire toy, be sure to check with your vet to make sure it doesn’t need to be surgically removed.

#6 – Pantyhose

Stockings are something dogs and puppies love to chew on, though we’ll never understand why. Unfortunately, pant legs can be difficult to swallow and roll up into large balls that can cause blockages. As with all other items, ask your veterinarian if your dog has swallowed socks.

#7 – Underwear

Although we don’t like to admit it, most dog owners are aware that dogs and puppies love to nibble on our underwear. Not only is this particularly rough, but it is also dangerous as it can cause obstructions that need to be surgically removed. Shamefully, though, if your dog has eaten underwear, it’s important to check with your vet – and be honest about what your dog has eaten!

# 8 – cob

Dogs are food lovers and are always sneaking up on our leftovers. One of the worst things a dog can pull out of your trash can or plate when you’re not looking is a cob. Cobs easily become obstructions and need to be surgically removed, so if you think your dog may have acquired any, contact your vet.

#9 – Tie your hair

Hair ties are a dangerous item that cannot be left around dogs, as they can easily damage the digestive tract or even choke your puppy. While a hair tie may not be the end of the world, some dogs will eat any amount they can find. This can develop into an immediate obstacle or even turn into an obstacle over time if your dog has unlimited access. Be sure to check with your veterinarian if you notice your dog ingesting even a single hair tie, as they most likely get stuck inside.

# 10 – Sticks

Sticks are a very old dog toy and perhaps because they are a bit dangerous. The stick can break into sharp pieces that can stab and cut a dog’s mouth and digestive tract, but large pieces can cause blockages, which need to be surgically removed.
