Breeders ‘Cup Pre-Entries Whet Appetite for Showdowns
Based on previous entries released October 26 for the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championship on November 4-5 at KeenelandA head-to-head pair awaits in the event’s two biggest dirt races.
In the Longines Breeders ‘Cup Classic (G1) $6 million, undefeated Flight route surpassed his runaway win in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) but will have to beat last year’s Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Life is good who this year has won three tier 1 races and has yet to lose in North America.
Meanwhile, the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) offers an always exciting showdown between an older, 4-year-old horse. Malathaat , who won the Eclipse Award as a 3-year-old child champion last year and won the level 1 overall; and this year’s top 3, Nest , a three-time 1st grade winner this season, who also earned the classic finish of runner-up to men in the Belmont Bets presented by NYRA Bets (G1). Both of them are daughters of Curlin and both are coached by Todd Pletcher.
Like many of this year’s class 1 races in North America, these will feature prominent but small-field horses. Distaff is possibly the smallest field of the event with only eight cars and mares entered first. Awake At Midnyte Contacts have listed Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) as a priority but since she’s outside of that full field, Distaff may be more likely for her.
