Smart notebooks are one way to reduce your environmental impact, especially if you are someone who buys an annual planner or is someone who likes to keep a diary. In addition to being eco-friendly, it is an obvious fact that many people still prefer handwritten notes, journal entries, lists and planners to using a digital alternative.

Rocketbook Pro’s greatness lies in its two-pronged approach to a smart notebook; you get both the benefits of old-fashioned handwriting and the ability to archive and save your pages digitally.

How did that last part work? The notebook cover on the Rocketbook Pro has an embedded NFC chip that, when held near an NFC-enabled smartphone running iOS or Android, leads to the Rocketbook app. This will then allow you to scan your pages and save them as a shareable PDF, individually or as a bundle. It can be preset to automatically send scans to different destinations, like OneDrive, Evernote, Slack, email, iCloud, Google Drive, box, OneNote, etc; all have different codes at the bottom of each page.

Once you’re done with your notes and satisfied with how they’ve been scanned into the app, you can wipe down your Rocketbook Pro page with a damp microfiber cloth.

Rocketbook has also taken a step towards a more professional look with its Smart Notebook Pro, by ditching the spiral spine and flexible cover in favor of a portfolio-style scratch-resistant, hardcover made of vegan leather.

The hardcover on this newer option is something that many users of earlier versions of Rocketbook have requested. The Pro version can also lie completely flat when open for easier writing, and bend 360 degrees for quick notes on the go.

As a lover of bulleted journaling and organization in general, I love the customizability of a blank or dotted notebook. My Bulleted Journal serves as an all-in-one tool for planning, writing down work and meeting tasks, lists, to-dos, budgeting, and random annotations.

Rocketbook Pro has many page packs from planners to blank pages for sketching, so the ability to customize my planner is available. Pilot also offers erasable Frixion pens, such as crayon clicker, tick, colored chalkand many more options to make my journaling heart flutter.

Pilot Frixion Pen Eraser

In addition to a damp cloth, the included Pilot Frixion Pen also has a pretty effective eraser on one end.

I like to keep my old diaries as snapshots of my life at that stage, but scanning and saving my pages also serves the same purpose and the fact that I can wipe the page to start over is convenient.

After using it for a few weeks, I can’t say for certain that I’ll never go back to my pen and paper notebook, especially my beloved bulleted diary. But I can certainly say that I won’t for a long time. I love the fact that Rocketbook Pro is so flexible that I can create my own layout on a dotted grid and I can erase any mistakes I make — something I can’t do on my paper diary. Currently, I find myself just reaching for my Rocketbook whenever I have to jot down or try to organize my thoughts, so that’s a win in my book.

Rocketbook Pro has letter size, 8.5 inches by 11 inches, retails for $60; and operating dimensions 7 inches by 9 inches, price $55.
