Oaks’ win remained ‘Surreal’ to Walsh the next morning


Purebred Godolphin Quite mischievous ‘ The historic Kentucky Oaks (G1) win is yet to come to pass for Brendan Walsh.

“Maybe after the weekend there will be,” Walsh said on the morning of May 6 after landing the biggest race of his coaching career. “It’s surreal. It’s a great feeling and I’m happy for everyone.”

Walsh says: “I started out on their farm in Ireland and since then they have been a huge influence on my career. “I’ve spent nine winters in Dubai as their exercise rider. It’s been an honor to train them and train horses of this caliber. It’s just a privilege.”

“I think (the winks) helped her. She’s laning as good as she used to be but she passed him a nice shot and could be sitting around for a bit like she usually does but we’re not. definitely not having a negative impact on anything,” Walsh said. “Perhaps we should keep them for now.”

“She gives her best every time she races,” Repole Stable manager Danielle Bricker said of Gambling Girl. “The fact that she sat so far back and so far forward made us wonder ‘will she get tired of making up for that or keep going’, so we’re so proud of her and the way she’s done. Bricker reports that Gambler Girl will be sent to trainer Todd Pletcher’s stable at Racecourse Saratoga keep an eye on the big 1st grade events.

“We’re going to put together a plan for her and hopefully she’ll do well there,” Bricker said. “She (the Oaks) showed up really well. We went back to the stables yesterday after the race and she was still on tiptoe. Yesterday before the race, she got pretty aggressive in the stables; normally she’s quiet and easygoing so it looks like she was excited and ready to run.”
