The fat tire RadRover 6 Plus has been on the WIRED test team for a few months and it performs very well on rough terrain and steep hills. At 73 pounds, this mountain bike is heavy and hard to pedal without a helper when you’ve run out of battery within its 45-mile range, but the powerful 750-watt motor and throttle will carry you with speed. 20 mph, and hydraulic brakes provide the power to stop when you need to breathe. This is the lowest price we’ve ever tracked.

With a 40-mile range, a top speed of 20 mph, and a 48-pound weight, the CTY e1.1’s specs are acceptable but not spectacular. We haven’t tested it yet, but its hydraulic brakes (for more powerful braking) and integrated headlights and taillights are welcome additions at this price point. The scooter can go fast (up to 27 miles per hour) thanks to a 500-watt motor, and WIRED review editor Julian Chokkattu managed to go 16 miles on a single charge. However, he is 6’4″, so you can get closer to the 20-mile range if not more. It weighs 57 pounds, so it’s not too easy to carry it around. Apollo says it will ship the Pro model in August and the standard City in October (the Pro model can run faster, even heavier, and have a slightly better range).
I have been trying Scrambler for a while and am very pleased with its quality. It weighs 71 pounds, but the powerful 750-watt motor allows it to hit 28 mph and the bike comes with a throttle, 45-mile range and looks like a small offroad motorcycle.

Even if you’re driving in the city or on streetlighted suburban roads, it’s important to have lighting at night so cars can see you. The 500 lumen NiteRider headlight and 110 lumen taillight are brighter than most lights in this price range, and especially the front light should be enough to completely illuminate unlit roads at night.
The Vio (8/10, recommended wired) is not just a helmet. It’s a viable alternative to having your bike’s headlights and taillights fitted. The 200 lumen forward-facing light isn’t enough to light up a pitch-black road, but the 360-degree LED coverage will help other drivers and drivers see you. Pannier bags are the best way to carry your bike’s casual cargo. They attach to the pannier rack on the rear wheel of the bike and keep the center of gravity low. This is the easiest bike lock to carry when I’m testing bicycle lock. It has a built-in clip that slides easily over a belt or backpack strap, so you don’t have to attach it to your bike’s frame, and at just 2.4 pounds, it won’t weigh you down. Its U-lock is 14mm thick, which means it has a bit of protection from a thief’s tool.
