First time finally released year as limited edition, new Bukk by Cake electricity Off-road motorcycles are now ready for mass consumption. And, as we’ve come to expect from the Swedish electric motorcycle company, it looks slick as hell.
Obviously, the Cake Bukk doesn’t look too different from the brand’s existing high-end dual sport bike, the Kalk. But there is a difference if you know where to look. For starters, Bukk features an all-new powertrain, developed from the ground up by Cake.
Dubbed ‘Jante’, the Bukk factory is a new proprietary internal permanent magnet, radial flux motor, housed in an aircraft-grade aluminum housing. Utilizing a dual bearing shaft, it is said to deliver optimum efficiency, power output and reliability, with smoother acceleration and more control at low speeds. This makes a mountain bike like the Bukk the perfect vehicle to showcase it.
The Jante engine produces a maximum peak power of 16 kW and a rated power of 11.01 kW in Bukk. It’s the flagship ‘Power Light’ model; there is also a ‘Ultralight’ model, rated at 13 kW [peak] and 8.5 hp [nominal]. The torque figure for the Power Light version is 76 Nm at the drive shaft and 456 Nm at the wheel.
That’s a pretty loud grunt, when you consider that Bukk only weighs 89 kg [195 lbs], batteries included. It is built around a forged aluminum frame and is surrounded by beautifully designed, lightweight components. (We saw Cake Kalk up close, and if Bukk was even neat from a distance, it would have guaranteed hours.)
Powering the Bukk is a 72 Volt Lithium-ion battery, which should last for about three hours on the trail (actual performance may vary by usage, naturally). And if you want to stay out longer, the battery can be replaced in 30 seconds, no tools.
Most notably, Cake will allow each customer to specify their Bukk to match their trip. 19F/18R wheels and Formula brakes are standard, but you can choose between WP Suspension or Formula forks, and WP Suspension, RacingBros or Öhlins shocks. You can also designate your Bukk as off-road or road-only or as an all-purpose bike.
Geometrically, the Bukk has a length of 1,340 mm [52.8”] wheelbase, 335 mm [13.2”] ground clearance, and a whopping 955 mm [37.6”] seat height. There’s also a wide range of electronic driver aids, and these can even be customized — or upgraded — through Cake’s smartphone app.
Bukk Super Light will cost you a minimum of €10,270 or $10,270, with Power Light starting at €11,070 or $11,070. It’s in standard trim, with prices increasing according to individual specifications. It’s also cheaper than the company’s Kalk, which currently generates less power than Bukk.
If you want to compare it to a gas-guzzling enduro, the two-stroke KTM 300 XC-W has an RRP of $11,099 in the US… but the Bukk is less likely to upset the neighbors. It’s ironic, when you consider that ‘Bukk’ means ‘Thunder Cloud’ in Gutnish—an ancient language from the island of Gotland, where Cake checks their bicycles.
