General Motors produces Corvette, Cadillac electric cars – report

Sedans may be on the decline but General Motors reportedly plans to continue offering them, led by Porsche rival Taycan Chevrolet Corvette sedan.

GM agency and Muscle cars and trucks reports that an electric Corvette sedan is in production, which will be sold alongside the existing coupe and convertible, and a potential Corvette-branded electric SUV.

The Corvette sedan is expected to debut sometime in the middle of the decade and will be the first Corvette with an electric powertrain.

This is also the first time a Corvette has had more than two doors and will rival not only Taycanbut also high-performance EVs like Tesla Model S Plaid and Audi e-tron GT.

It is said to use a dedicated electric vehicle architecture that GM calls Ultium, which also underpins models like the Cadillac Lyriq.

GM unveiled high-performance EVs, with GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 outputting 619kW (746kW in boost mode) from the three-motor electric drivetrain allows the 4-ton pickup to hit 96 km/h in just three seconds.

Therefore, the action potential of these components in a lighter, lower vehicle is quite obvious.

Chevrolet confirmed earlier this year an electrified Corvette is due in 2023, with an “all-electric version”.

But Muscle cars and trucks reports that the recently introduced C8 Corvette coupe and convertible – the first mid-engined generation – will not be offered an electric powertrain, although an electric C9 Corvette seems inevitable.

The publication reports that the electric Corvette “follows up” will instead be this Corvette-branded sedan, which uses a different platform than the electric two-door.

A report from Bloomberg in early 2021 said GM was considering creating a Corvette sub-brand, with High efficiency power crossover at the earliest by 2025.

Automotive News then report a high performance electric sedan will go into production in 2025.

The model is expected to be built at GM’s Lansing Grand River assembly in Michigan, which currently produces the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans and Chevrolet Camaro coupe and convertible.

The Camaro was supposed to end production in 2024, once again malfunctioning without a replacement.

In contrast, Cadillac sedans will be replaced, with Automotive News reports new electric models to launch in 2026.

They will rank below the top of the line new, exclusive Celestiq, preview in concept form and is expected to go into production in 2023.

GM agency says that these CT4 and CT5 successors will retain the low hip points but will feature a fast body like the 2016 Escala concept, which previewed design elements seen on recent Cadillac models.

Whether Cadillac will choose to offer the same level of performance as Corvette EVs remains unclear, although such a move would help the luxury brand replace the mighty CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing.

Cadillac will transition to EV-only vehicles by 2030 and is preparing to replace electricity with its current internal combustion engine-powered models.

Automotive News reports that Cadillac’s XT4, XT5 and XT6 crossovers will all end production sometime in the middle of this decade, with the new Lyriq serving as the successor to the XT5 and replacements for the other two.

An electric Escalade, likely to be called the Escalade IQ and IQL, is also expected to go on sale sometime in the middle of the last decade alongside the current combustion-engined model.

Cadillac hasn’t finished rolling out its new combustion engine models yet.

A second-generation CT6 sedan was tested in China, where the current model is still in production after the end of US production in 2020.

Patent images have also leaked out of China of a new entry-level crossover that could wear the GT4 nameplate and serve as a rival to similar cars. BMW X2.
