Overall, the city’s fleet as a whole has raked in $653.9 million in payments over 10 years.-a one-year period spanning from Fiscal Year 2012 to Fiscal Year 2021. The report found that while incident claims were lower at the end of the decade than at the beginning of the decade, the total value of payments is higher over the years. In 2021, the city said it spent $130.1 million on the issue. Means of settlement for an accident have increased from an average of $9,000 in fiscal year 2012 to $50,000 in fiscal year 2021.
Some of which – as pointed out in the report – have to do with NYPD growing fleet of SUVs. It now accounts for 18 percent of the NYPD’s total vehicle fleet, and it has outstripped the city’s other fleets. The report states that larger vehicles involved in collisions tend to cause more damage and injuries.
The report also shows that if New York City can reduce accident claims by 20%, it could save the city (and us, great taxpayers) $25 million a year. .
“Vehicle crash epidemics are a serious public safety concern for New Yorkers, and unfortunately, the City fleet is no exception,” said Brand Lander, City Controller. city, said in the report.
