The Volkswagen Group is entering Formula 1 in a big way.
Group CEO Herbert Diess has confirmed both Audi and Porsche will join the grid in some form for the 2026 season.
Mr Diess pointed to the new regulations coming into effect in 2026 for motorists, along with the broader push of this category into synthetic fuels. F1’s growth in markets like the US and China is also a factor.
In particular, Porsche has positioned itself as a leader in the eFuel space sector, so it is entirely appropriate to run a Formula 1 program using this technology. It supplied TAG-branded engines to McLaren in the 1980s, although its F1 history is lackluster along with its enduring racing pedigree.

Porsche is heavily involved in motorsport, with everything from 911 to the company’s custom Formula E car.
Audi has retired from Le Mans, but remains active in TCR, motorsport and (until the end of the current season) Formula E motorsport.
