Leica announces the SL3 full-frame mirrorless camera

Leica announced SL3 full-frame mirrorless camera, is built around the new Maestro IV image processor and a new 60MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor. The camera features the company’s Triple Resolution Technology, allowing users to shoot at 60, 36, or 18 megapixel resolution in JPEG or DNG RAW formats, in each case using the entire sensor area for capture. image. According to Leica, the dynamic range has been expanded to 15 stops (up from 14 stops above SL2) and sensitivity has been boosted, with a top ISO of 100,000 (up from 50,000 on the SL2). The biggest leap forward for the SL series, however, is the move to phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), which combines with Leica’s contrast-detection and depth-mapping features to create a focus system. Much improved automation.

The SL3 is capable of continuous shooting at up to 5 fps with continuous AF/AE using either the mechanical or electric shutter. Higher continuous shooting speeds are possible—up to 7 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 15 fps with the electronic shutter—but AF/AE is locked. These are slightly worse numbers than the SL2, but are perhaps understandable given the increased resolution of the SL2’s 47MP sensor. On the video side, the SL3 can shoot C8K/30p (17:9) or DCI 4K/60p (17:9) at 10-bit 4:2:0, each with a 1.17x crop, and 8K/30p (16:9) or UHD 4K/60p (16:9) at 10-bit 4:2:0, each with a 1.24x crop ratio.

The package comes complete with dual card slots (one CFexpress Type B slot and one UHS-II SD slot), 5.76M dot OLED EVF with refresh rate up to 120 fps, touchscreen Rear tilt 2.33M points and full size HDMI port. Unfortunately, SL2 users looking to upgrade won’t be able to use their SL2 housing as the new camera has been slightly reduced in size and has a third command dial on the right-hand side.

The Leica SL3 is available to order today for $6,995.

PRESS RELEASE

New: Leica SL3

Leica’s new mirrorless full-frame system camera is now available. In 2015, Leica Camera AG introduced the SL-System, a unique combination of the worlds of photography and videography. From the beginning, Leica has focused on working with users and the photography community to ensure that their products meet exceptional standards. The result is a system that meets the highest requirements for image quality, manufacturing quality and ease of handling. Now, the storied company introduces the next generation of its mirrorless full-frame system: the Leica SL3.

The demanding requirements of professional photographers have long been considered the benchmark and inspiration for the development of systems, especially the Leica SL3. The result is an extremely versatile camera that delivers unprecedented image quality in both photography and videography. The SL3 combines cutting-edge technology, exceptional design and masterful manufacturing quality – more compact, lighter and even more user-friendly than the previous model. The new functions of the Leica SL3 are based on a continuous dialogue with experts, highly appreciated by the company and developed in the ever-changing world of photography.

At the core of the Leica SL3 you can find a full-frame BSI CMOS sensor with Triple Resolution Technology, securely encased in a sturdy all-metal body with an elegant leather finish. To meet a variety of imaging requirements, the sensor records raw files in DNG or JPEG format at 60, 36, or 18 MP resolution. In each case, the entire sensor surface is used. With an expanded dynamic range of 15 f-stops and an impressive ISO range of 50 to 100,000, the SL3 delivers exceptionally detailed images of exceptional quality – in all lighting conditions.

With phase detection (PDAF), depth mapping (subject detection AF), and contrast detection (contrast detection AF), the SL3’s innovative autofocus system combines the strengths of three technologies to produce sharp photos even in dim light. In addition, the smart subject recognition feature also supports taking photos of dynamic scenes.

The lens bayonet, based on the L-Mount standard developed by Leica, facilitates the use of superior lenses from all Leica camera systems. Additionally, it is compatible with a wide range of ultra-wide to ultra-telephoto zoom lenses offered by L-Mount alliance partners. The lens bayonet therefore ensures broad system compatibility for the Leica SL3. Specifically, the outstanding potential of the famous Leica M lenses has been fully exploited thanks to the unique design of the image sensor and external light sensor. In-body image stabilization further expands the range of applications for M.

The Leica SL3’s EyeRes® viewfinder is equipped with an optical system elaborately crafted with glass lenses. It always displays subjects clearly at up to 120 frames per second and a resolution of 5.76 million pixels. Live preview mode allows complete control over the exposure and composition of the image even before releasing the shutter. Another new feature is a tiltable 3-inch high-resolution touchscreen with a high-quality tilt mechanism. Even more creativity can be achieved through additional perspectives.

Video is recorded at up to 8K resolution, supported by efficient codecs like H.265 and Apple’s ProRes. A dedicated timecode interface enables professional image and sound synchronization on set. During this process, the new Maestro-IV processor with L² technology easily processes huge amounts of data, resulting in images with stunning color rendering as well as excellent anti-noise performance.

Another highlight is the Leica SL3’s new user interface. Every optimization is aimed at enhancing user comfort such as ergonomics, tactile feel and menu navigation. As a result, the camera’s grip, button layout, and overall design have been refined to further enhance intuitive handling. Updated, streamlined menu and icon designs provide clear structure, facilitating even easier navigation. The clear separation between photo and video modes proves especially beneficial as it is supported by a specific color code to differentiate: red for photo mode and yellow for video mode.

Furthermore, the camera’s main functions can be fully adjusted to individual needs. Freely assignable FN keys and optimized touch interaction in the menu further enhance the camera’s intuitive and comfortable operation. When taking photos and videos, the SL3’s user interface adjusts itself to landscape or portrait format, depending on the camera’s position. Thanks to convenient handling, improved ergonomics, rugged design, and IP54 certification, photographers can focus on shooting in all weathers and environments. At the same time, the new SL3 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessors and is even more comfortable to use.

Leica user experience undergoes continuous improvement. Regular firmware updates, influenced by valuable customer feedback, are delivered seamlessly to the SL3 via the Leica FOTOS app. This ensures the camera stays up-to-date and future-proof in a user-friendly way.

The camera’s new interface and improved connectivity ensure a seamless professional workflow. Features CFexpress type B and UHS-II-SD card slots, a USB-C port for high-speed data transfer, connectivity and power, and a full-size HDMI 2.1 output for external displays or devices record . Additionally, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with MIMO technology ensure a stable and fast connection with the Leica FOTOS app. As an Apple-certified accessory “Made for iPhone® and iPad®,” the Leica SL3 and included USB-C cable allow direct connection to Apple products.

The new BP-SCL6 battery, along with a dual charger sold separately, provides ample capacity. This dual charger allows charging two batteries simultaneously and faster. Dual chargers and additional batteries are available individually or as an attractive set. Furthermore, accessories in the SL-System now include new handles and DC couplers. The DC coupler can be installed into the camera’s battery slot to ensure continuous power via USB-C.
