Hyundai Mobis brainwave technology found to help tired drivers

The brainwave driver monitoring headset, developed by leading OEM supplier Hyundai Mobis, has been shown to reduce driver drowsiness and distracted driving in a test. on the bus.

Gyeonggi Research Institute conducted a study on the Hyundai Mobis M.Brain device, revealed in July 2021, using data from an experimental project with public bus drivers as test subjects. experience.

M.Brain measures a driver’s condition in real time by detecting their brain waves around their ears through sensors. Software with a noise reduction filter then takes data from these brainwaves and alerts the driver through a tracking app.

More usefully, the system it operates on can remind the driver of fatigue with warnings for various sensory organs such as vision (activates LEDs around the driver’s seat), touch (reminds seat vibration) and auditory (sound transmitted through the headrest speaker).

“According to the results of the pilot application, it has been proven that drivers using M.Brain show a higher level of concentration and are less likely to face the dangers of inattention,” said Hyundai Mobis. said.

The pilot project showed that drivers using M.Brain noticed 30% more attention after a meal, a time known for drowsiness. It has also reduced inattentive driving on the highway by about 20%.

Hyundai Mobis said it will expand the deployment of M.Brain to 300 public buses by the end of the year. The plan is to “scale up the demonstration and apply deep learning to speed up the analytics process,” it said.

We’re not sure on the practical side, but it seems to be a technology with some potential – especially for public transport and freight drivers.
