Fast Hyundai Tucson N could be hybrid and all-wheel drive
Hyundai’s N division has worked its way through several of the brand’s products, with the all-electric Ioniq 5 N also coming to market.
However, one car that has missed out on the N handling so far is the midsize sedan. SUV Tucsonbut that can be set to change.
Hyundai Executive Technical Advisor Albert Biermann says auto expert there’s scope for a Tucson N and it won’t necessarily be powered by an internal combustion engine and front-wheel drive.
“I mean we have the Kona N, we can even think bigger and say it’s okay, maybe one day we’ll have a Tucson N,” he said.
“It might just be the burn. It could be hybrid, it could be plug-in [hybrid]. All are there. All are available no problem.”
When asked how Hyundai decided which variant should get the N treatment, Biermann gave a somewhat convoluted answer.
“It’s a very complicated procedure and it depends on many manufacturers and people’s opinions. Process, it is not very powerful. It depends on many circumstances,” he said.
“And we could never count on the selling point that there was some sort of pull from the market. If so, we wouldn’t have N cars. It won’t be an N car, you need other power in that company. The ideas are different from the normal process for such cars.”
It is hoped that if Hyundai goes the hybrid or plug-in hybrid route for the Tucson N it will be an all-wheel drive proposition with an electric motor mounted on the rear axle.
An electric Tucson N would also make sense given increasingly stringent emissions regulations in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
Hyundai is now offering a sporty N Line package on the Tucson, with many exterior and interior design tweaks. However, it does not provide any additional mechanical or power changes.
outward Konaon the contrary, there is both the sporty-looking N Line variant and the official N model. However, the latter is only front-wheel drive.
