CONCACAF World Cup 2022 Qualifiers: Fixtures, standings, TV for Octagon football

We’re in the middle of qualifying and USA is topping the World Cup 2022 qualifying rankings CONCACAF. After it most recent 2-0 win Mexico in Ohio, the Americans are currently in the driver’s seat in the chase for a direct ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with each of the top three spots. Of course, that could all change late Tuesday.

Canada (3rd, 13 points) and Panama (Wednesday, 11 points) continued to chase behind the two CONCACAF powers. Both won their matches in game 7 as Canada beat Costa Rica at home, and Panama pulled off a sloppy performance of the day, coming back from 2-0 to win. 3-2 on the road in Honduras. Panama has a big chance to take the total when they host El Salvador, while unbeaten Canada will play another home game against Mexico.

The other half of the table is in a precarious position. A group of three teams – Costa Rica (day 5), Jamaica (Friday), El Salvador (Rank 7) – currently five points behind Panama for fourth place, the team claiming a spot in the intercontinental play-in for one of the final spots at the World Cup. Jamaica needs to start winning home games, starting with the US on Tuesday. Costa Rica hosts the last place Honduras in a must-win game for Ticos.

How CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers Work

Eight countries from the CONCACAF region (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) are competing for three automatic spots to the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the final “octagon” qualifier.

The eight nations will face off in a one-round round-robin format with each team playing against the other seven opponents once at home and once in the top lane. A total of 14 matches for each national team starts in September 2021 and will end in March 2022.

The top three finishers automatically go to Qatar, while the fourth-placed team enters the intercontinental playoffs with the final ticket to Qatar. Here is the standings for the teams even by points:

  1. Goal difference in all group stage matches
  2. Score the most goals in all group stage matches
  3. Most of the points are obtained from group stage matches between the teams involved
  4. Goal difference compared to group stage matches between the teams involved
  5. Most of the goals were scored in group stage matches between the teams involved
  6. Goal scored away (if two teams tie)
  7. Disciplinary points (based on yellow/red cards)
  8. FIFA draw

The Qatar FIFA World Cup will take place from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
