Amnesty International and other human rights groups have called on FIFA to set aside $440 million (£356 million) to compensate migrant workers in Qatar for “human rights violations” during the process. Preparing for the World Cup 2022.

In a letter to FIFA President Gianni InfantinoThe groups argue that world football’s governing body should also work with the host country to protect the rights of migrant workers in the future.

“In order to remedy the abuses committed since 2010, when FIFA awarded Qatar the right to host without demanding any improvement in labor protections, the organizations have called on FIFA to at least be compatible. worthy of the $440 million they gave for the World Cup prize money.” Amnesty said in a statement.

The Qatari government says its labor system is still in the process of being perfected but denies allegations made in an earlier Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers have been exploited.

A 48-page report by Amnesty, Reality Check 2021, says that practices such as withholding wages and forcing workers to change jobs are still rife.

In response to the letter, FIFA said it was evaluating the proposal and looking for ways to ensure “the closure of all claims related to FIFA World Cup projects, including pre-event cases.”

FIFA added that it is working with the organizers and has already compensated some workers.

“Through the recruitment fee reimbursement scheme, for example, both FIFA World Cup and non-FIFA World Cup workers received payments totaling $22.6 million as of December 2021, with 5 additional $7.7 million committed by contractors,” it said.

The World Cup will take place from November 21 to December 18.
