Canelo Alvarez is hugely popular in many ways. Not only does the man have more fans than any other single boxer, but he’s basically got every top executive in his overall weight field looking to get in on the action. join him in a big money game. Benevidez. Charlo. Golovkin. Andrade. These are the types of names that Canelo could choose as a future opponent. It’s good to be Canelo right now, but the man himself doesn’t think it’s all about him. “We just wanted to make history and we proved it,” said Canelo ESNews. “I said I was fine with that. I will fight anyone, but they (potential future opponents) need to fight each other too. They always wait for me because they want a good payday. I know that. But they need to fight each other.”
Canelo recently signed with WBA light heavyweight player Dmitry Bivol as part of an overall deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom boxing. These two opponents did not dominate. Bivol is undefeated for a reason… and many feel that Golovkin has been robbed by the referees not once but twice, in the face of Canelo. Both Golovkin and Bivol aspire to be in the ring (or, in Golovkin’s case, back in the ring) with Canelo. On the matter – these are not easy battles. However, critics will be critical and there are claims that Canelo should focus his efforts on facing “stronger” opposition.
Canelo, however, is nothing if not a confident man. He made his decision and now he feels people will have to live with it. “Everybody wants to fight me but they also have a lot of options to play against each other,” he said. “I’m busy this year.” Canelo then bluntly stated that his goal is legacy, not wealth. “I just want to make history,” he said, making it clear he was looking for challenges like the one Bivol offered. “He is a very good boxer,” added Canelo, making it clear that a victory over the hard-working Russians will bring more than just financial rewards.
While anyone who follows boxing closely will find Canelo enjoys the perk of making millions, this man is nothing like Floyd Mayweather, who seems to be quite lavish in his earnings. mine. “The money is there, no problem,” Canelo said. “I don’t care about money, I care about my legacy.”
