BYD Seal 2024 Malaysia review – two variants, from RM180k;  How does it compare to the Tesla Model 3?

First shown in Malaysia by the end of 2022 and releasing already in February this year, BYD seal to the Malaysian market as its closest competitor Tesla Model 3and the Chinese electric model is offered here in two variants; starting from RM180,430 for Premium and RM200,430 for Performance AWD.

The Premium marks the entry point for the Seal range in Malaysia and features a 313 PS/360 Nm rear motor powered by an 82.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. This allows the Premium variant to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and the battery range is claimed to be 580 km (WLTP), or 57 km more than the base Tesla Model 3 variant. base, priced higher than RM10,000.

The second of the two Seal variants is the Performance AWD which features a dual motor powertrain for all-wheel drive and boasts a combined output of 530 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque. This delivers a significant step up in sprint performance, reducing the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to just 3.8 seconds. The same 82.5 kWh battery is used for the Performance AWD, so its range is shorter, at 520 km.

The 800-volt electrical architecture allows both variants of the Seal to accept DC charging up to 150 kW, which will top up the battery 10-80% in 37 minutes. In terms of AC charging, the Seal uses an onboard charger that only has a maximum output of 7 kW, and so a full charge from the wall-mounted AC box will take 15.2 hours.

What further distinguishes the Premium variant from the dual-motor Performance AWD version is that the latter has passive frequency-selective damping, and both are specified similarly. Both are equipped with 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels with 235/45 tires, on this basis is the Continental Ecocontact 6 Q.

Inside, BYD Seal continues the brand’s organic interior style, albeit with more restraint than above Atto 3and here the Seal boasts a larger screen than that specified in other BYD models; This has a 10.25-inch digital dashboard and a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen.

The safety suite on the Seal includes eight airbags (including rear side airbags), stability control and a full range of driver assistance features. These include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, lane-centering assist, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring with collision prevention, and cross-traffic alert. Front and rear cross-section convenience with automatic braking and automatic headlights.
