Ask a Health Coach: Eat Intuitive vs. Eat Original

Hi guys, Council Certified Health Coach Chloe Maleski is here to answer your questions about intuitive eating. Wondering what intuitive eating is and is it Primal? We are here with guidance and support! Have a question you’d like to ask our health coaches? Leave it below in the comments or in the Mark’s Daily Apple Facebook group.

Janice asked:
“I am thinking of doing a visual eating program. What’s better? That or Primal? Can I do both? I am confused!”

First, you’re not alone, Janice! It’s easy to get confused by the many diet and eating approaches out there — many of which offer conflicting advice.

One important thing to keep in mind is that there is no one way of eating that is optimal for everyone. What is “better” or “best” for you depends on many factors, including personal characteristics and conditions, health and wellness goals, and factors related to resources and abilities. accessibility.

That said, there are certainly certain foods and ways of eating that are detrimental to quite a few people. When it comes to health, longevity and vitality, a diet full of sugar, highly refined seed oils, fast foods and processed foods is never a good idea!

On the other hand, eating in ways that are closer to what our ancestors ate is more likely to have healthy outcomes. At the most basic level, we’re really talking about real food, whole in its most natural state or with minimal processing. Think:

The above are Primal staples and provide our bodies with what it needs to thrive — not just survive. When eating this way consistently over time, people often become intuitive eaters with a sense of knowing what their bodies want and when they’re really hungry. As a result, they are less likely to indulge in comfort eating or emotional eating because of stress, anxiety, boredom, or just out of habit.

In general, this is not the case when we eat a diet full of “modern” foods that disrupt our endocrine systems and metabolism, and contribute to systemic infection. Grains and sugar are a major culprit in this regard. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to “intuitively eat” if these foods have disrupted our body’s signaling systems and caused us to lose our sense of natural sweetness in whole foods as well. like feeling hungry and full. Due to their physiological effects on our endocrine system and insulin levels, grains and sugars promote cravings for, well, more grains and sugars!

Eat original = Eat intuitive

All that said, eating Primal is eating intuitively. This is especially the case if you are committed to eating Primal consistently, while also following the other Primal Blueprint Laws. Those things, along with food choices, influence our body’s hormonal signaling system and determine whether we’re hitting on what we really want and need.

While all 10 Primordial Detail Laws are important, the main Laws here include:

Think about it. If you stick to those three things, along with eating plants and animals and avoiding harmful things (including grains, sugars, and the highly processed foods mentioned above), you’ll definitely get better. feel better and intuitively know what and when your body wants to eat.

Intuitive eating = Intuitive eating

Simple, right? However, we humans tend to complicate things…

There is a whole method and practice called Intuitive Eating (capitalize “I” and “E”). This approach differs from the Original Blueprint Law in one key way. Specifically, one of the core tenets of Intuitive Eating is to allow unconditionally to eat anything in the amount your body wants. As we learned above, this is tricky in that what you eat determines what your body wants.

For some people, this unconditional “blue light” relieves stress and aids them in healing disordered eating and unhelpful patterns around food, diet, and shape. body photo. In such cases, the Intuitive Eating approach can actually provide healthy, intuitive eating patterns (and can even lead people to the Primordial diet, which is the optimal from a physiological and evolutionary point of view).

For others, this approach can backfire, for the simple reason that the foods we choose have a huge impact on our physiology. If sugar and cake are allowed, you eat sugar and cake… well, your whole physiology will eventually want and demand more of that.

Because there’s no single approach that works for everyone, you have to experiment and be really honest about why a particular approach resonates. Is that “permission granted”? Carte blanche to eat cake? Or something different?

There’s no judgment here, but to really adopt a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle, you need to ask yourself the following questions. As an Original Health Coach, one of my primary jobs is to guide clients through self-reflection and help them figure out what approaches and strategies will work best for them.

Primal Resilience = Good News!

Worth mentioning here is that the Primal lifestyle isn’t all bad news! For one, the 10 Primitive Laws of Detail are really just parameters to guide the path. There is no need or expectation to make it always “perfect”. Make a focused, consistent effort and you’ll likely feel better, healthier and stronger and want to keep going.

When we give the body what it is designed to consume and live in ways that help it move towards health and vitality, our intuition and inner barometer become more and more active. stronger. This makes intuitive eating and intuitive living something “we just do”, without having to depend on outside rules and guidelines.

Food freedom

When we eat Primal most of the time on a continuous basis, we become metabolically flexible and increasingly resilient. In cases where we feel the non-primal food is really worth it, it’s easier and quicker to return it. We just woke up the next day, reset with Primal meals and moved on.

To me, this is real food freedom: Eat and live to grow. Know that one treatment won’t derail my trajectory toward looking and feeling my best. Always remember that our bodies are on our side and want us to eat and live in ways that feel better.

To get there, it can take time. And the exact route will vary from person to person. For assistance in that, consider working directly with a Primal Health Coach! It’s more accessible than you might think, and we can help you understand which dietary approach and lifestyle practice is best for you. Visit myprimalcoach.com to learn more and get started!
