Julie Miller-Phipps will retire as president of operations for Kaiser Permanente in southern California and Hawaii in July, marking the end of her 45-year career with an integrated health system, the company announced. on Tuesday.
Miller-Phipps has led the company’s business operations based in Oakland, California in southern California since 2016 and in Hawaii since 2020. She was previously president of Kaiser Permanente Georgia from 2014 to 2016 and was senior vice president of Orange County, California, service area earlier in her career.
During Miller-Phipps’ tenure, the Kaiser Permanente membership in southern California, where it operates 15 hospitals and 236 medical offices, grew by half a million people to 4.8 million, according to the company. In Hawaii, Kaiser Permanente operates a hospital and 28 medical offices and clinics, and includes 266,500 members.
Miller-Phipps contributed to Kaiser Permanente’s COVID-19 strategy, which includes mass immunization centers, testing sites and mobile resources, the press release said. The company credits her for helping to quadruple its inpatient capacity during the winter surge.
Kaiser Permanente developed two hospitals in San Diego during her presidency: San Diego Medical Center, which opened in 2017, and San Marcos Medical Center, scheduled to open in August.
