Cleveland Clinic appoints Albert Marinez as its first chief analytics officer

Cleveland Clinic has tapped Albert Marinez for its newly created chief analytics officer role because of his success driving analytics strategy for large health systems and technology service providers over two decades, leaders say.

WHY IT MATTERS

Marinez, who most recently served as the chief analytics officer at Intermountain Health in Salt Lake City, not only led data and analytics strategy for the system’s care delivery sites but also launched its center of excellence for artificial intelligence and worked to implement a next-generation data analytics strategy and platform.

Marinez shared his views on AI and machine learning trends with Healthcare IT News in April and explained how automation is helping to scale value-based care efforts at the 33-hospital system, which he said is prioritizing a population health-first strategy.

Prior to Intermountain Health, Marinez held executive leadership roles at Swisslog Healthcare and KenSci, a healthcare startup specializing in AI and machine learning, as well as at MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, Washington, and AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division in Orlando, Florida.

In 2022, he served as a board member of the Microsoft Artificial Intelligence Industry Innovation Coalition for Healthcare.

“I look forward to joining the team at Cleveland Clinic and working to advance the use of data and analytics to enhance patient care while prioritizing privacy and safety in everything we do,” said Marinez.

THE LARGER TREND

Cleveland Clinic has pursued several unique technology C-suite hires in the past few years, such as the health system’s hiring in 2020 of its inaugural chief research information officer, Dr. Lara Jehi.

And this past year, Cleveland Clinic added Rohit Chandra, the former vice president of engineering at Sunshine Products, a Palo Alto-based tech startup, as chief data officer. Chandra was brought in to focus on AI and ML initiatives.

“New technologies are reinventing how we access, deliver and experience the best possible care,” said Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO and president at the time, calling Chandra “a visionary in applying these tools and technologies.”

ON THE RECORD

“As Cleveland Clinic works to responsibly expand our use of healthcare technology and data, we need a leader who will ensure the consistent gathering and application of analytics across our enterprise,” said Chandra on Monday about Marinez’s new role. “Albert has a history of success in driving the analytics strategy for healthcare organizations and is the ideal choice to guide the efforts that will benefit Cleveland Clinic’s patients and caregivers.”
