OBS reported 161 horses sold out of 212 on offer, with total sales of $22,149,000, up 20% from 2021. The median price was $75,000 and the median was 137,571 dollar is set. There were 51 horses that did not reach the reserve, giving an RNA rate of 24.1%. These numbers are subject to change due to after-sales reporting.
Last year, on the first day of sale, 195 ponies renamed 225 horses for a total sale of $18,427,900, with an average price of $50,000 and a median of $94,502. An RNA ratio of 13% represents 30 horses that failed to meet their reserves. These figures include the after-sale price.
The top news of the day marked a hot spot for Eddie Woods, who sold a daughter of Violence for $635,000 for Carolyn Wilson. Sitting inside the booth with longtime coach Larry Rivelli, Wilson was delighted to bring the striking youngster home. Designated as Hip 199, the Kentucky hybrid dog does not belong to Dixie Union mare Bold Union 3rd place winner and producer of Bold quality third in 2015 Pocahontas Stakes (G2).
“I thought we were going to have to go this high; a couple of other guys jumped on her late,” said coach Larry Rivelli. “She proofreads perfectly; she’s perfect, hard to find.”
Bidding on behalf of Zedan Racing Stables, agent Gary Young also received a pony (Hip 11) of the Triple Crown winner Evenly earlier in the day for $600,000 from Hidden Brook. Both purchases will go to trainer Bob Baffert of California. Zedan was the top buyer of the day, spending $2.9 million.
“It is a pleasure to sell horses like this again,” Halcyon Hammock delivery man Hal Hatch said of the overall market. “The market is strong. I’ve been here a long time and been through a lot of ups and downs. It’s great to be back at the top of the market right now.”
Four juveniles crossed $500,000 on the first day of sale, with only one breaking the seven-figure ceiling. This is the first time since 2017 that a horse has sold for more than $2 million in this sale; that was the record year set with the $2.45 million pony Tiznow.
“(The) April (Sale) is a good sale,” said pinhooker Scott Dilworth, sourcing colt sale-topping. “I sold a dirty item here about 10 years ago; her name is Tanda . We topped the session at $145,000, and here you have a horse that brought in $2.3 million, and (you see) how much this sale has grown. It was an extraordinary sale. “
Young called the spot market.
“If they bring in the right horse, you get paid, but if the horse has any flaws, if his preview is just that or any structural problem, they’re in trouble. difficult to sell them,” he said. “I’ve looked at the previous results and the buyback rates are normal, about what you’d expect… All of them won’t look like a $2.3 million horse.”
