Spend any amount of time reading about photography on the internet, and you’ll likely come across claims that professionals should shoot in manual mode. And there’s certainly some truth to the idea that manual mode gives you the kind of control you need for certain shooting situations, but that doesn’t mean it’s always the best choice. Without a doubt, manual mode can be an extremely useful tool for many situations, but there are other times when a semi-automatic mode like aperture priority can be a much better choice. Cameras can be much more responsive than we are capable of, and in conditions of rapid development it is better to leave those decisions up to the camera. For example, when I shoot baseballs, I manually set the shutter speed and aperture, but I leave the camera on auto ISO with a bit of negative exposure compensation to preserve highlights.
