Usyk free to leave Ukraine, Joshua rematch to go first this summer
United heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk is free to continue his boxing career.
In recent weeks, the 35-year-old Ukrainian, like many of his countrymen, has taken up arms to join the fight against Russia’s war against their country.
It looks like the WBA, IBF and WBO belt holder will stay in his homeland in the conflict that leaves a rematch with Anthony Joshua in full swing. However, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger tweeted this evening that Usyk has been given permission by Ukraine’s Sports Minister to leave the fight and start training again.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn isn’t sure what might happen next. And at the beginning of this month, reports suggested that ‘AJ’ will have an interim matchup until he can face Usyk again.
ESPN says that a second fight between the two will take place this summer, allowing both men enough time to prepare accordingly and to fuel the fight for maximum exposure.
