Ugas on Spence Jr unity: “I’ve always been a loser”

Yordenis Ugas says he knew his career was about to change for the better after beating Jamal James six years ago.

The Cuban (27-4, 12 KOs) set James’ undefeated record that night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino. Since then, Ugas has only lost once in 12 games, and that defeat was a close match for Shawn Porter for the WBC championship.

The 35-year-old is now just one win away from becoming a unified champion at 147lbs and a three-title holder. In his way was the undefeated American Errol Spence Jr (27-0, 21 KOs). Two fighters clashed on April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Speaking at an open practice session yesterday in Las Vegas, Ugas said: “I’m excited to be fighting in Spence’s backyard, because they have great fans in Texas. It just adds momentum.

“I was out of the ring for a long time, but when I came back and lost the first loss of his career, I knew I was coming for big things. Everything changed for me that night and it all led to this.”

Last year was the biggest year of Ugas’ career. Though only fought once, the only victory will be a life-changing battle. August 21, 2021 will go down in boxing history as it will be the last time fans will see Manny Pacquiao fight. Ugas was responsible for defeating the Filipino phenom to become the WBA welterweight champion.

“The match against Pacquiao was a great night for me. After that war, my life changed in many ways. But I always keep myself humble. I showed everyone who the WBA champion is. I have an eye on continuing to make history.”

Ugas also discussed his card as the underdog going into the April 16 reunification against Spence Jr.

“Being a weaker person means nothing to me. I was the underdog before Pacquiao and now again against Spence. I’ve always been the underdog and that doesn’t discourage me.

“It is an honor to be in the ring with Errol Spence Jr. We are fighting for the three belts, but it is more important to fight for honor and respect.

“Fans can expect me to fight like a fighter. I will train hard on April 16.”
