BMW iX1 eDrive20 M Sport 2024 launched in Malaysia – single engine FWD; 475 km electric range; from RM250k

BMW Malaysia has just introduced the new base variant of the BMW iX1 called eDrive20 M sports, retails for RM264,000 on-the-road without insurance. This figure comes with a 5-year extended warranty and a 6-year service plan, but without this the price drops to RM249,800.

Compare to iX1 xDrive30 M sports was launched in May last year, the eDrive20 M Sport is RM26,000 cheaper (with or without extended warranty and service pack). Of course, there are some notable differences in specs that come with the lower price.

First, the eDrive20 comes with a single front-mounted electric motor rated at 204 PS (201 horsepower or 150 kW) and 250 Nm of torque with transient overdrive enabled. This gives the car a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 170 km/h.

By comparison, the xDrive30 has a dual motor setup delivering up to 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) and 494 Nm – which also features temporary boost – for faster than century sprint times of 5.6 seconds and a slightly higher top speed of 180 km/h.

Both the eDrive20 and xDrive30 use the same lithium-ion battery with a total energy capacity of 66.5 kWh (64.7 kWh net), but the former has a higher WLTP-rated range of 475 km compared to 438 km of xDrive30.

Charging capabilities are identical for both variants, with the eDrive20 supporting up to 11 kW AC input as standard, delivering a full charge from 0-100% in 6.5 hours. DC fast charging up to 130 kW is also supported and takes the battery from 10-80% charge in 29 minutes.

One way to differentiate the eDrive20 from the xDrive30 is to look at the grille, which is a patterned panel on the base variant while the higher-spec version comes with vertical slats. Common features between the two iX1 variants include 19-inch M split-spoke 871 M light-alloy wheels, M Sport styling package, M high-gloss Shadowline package and high-gloss M Shadowline roof rails.

The list continues with adaptive LED headlights, adaptive M suspension, dual-zone climate control, M leather steering wheel, electrically adjustable front sports seats, anthracite headrests, wireless charging pad , BMW Live Cockpit Professional (10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen), Connectivity Package Professional (supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), IconicSounds Electric and Harman Kardon audio system.

The interior of the eDrive20 M Sport is Veganz synthetic leather or a combination of Alcantara and Veganza, combined with brightly colored ‘Hexacube’ aluminum interior trim elements. This is different from the xDrive30 M Sport which has the option of Vernasca leather or a combination of Alcantara and Sensatec. The interior trim features a similar ‘Hexacube’ design but in a darker color.

In the driver assistance department, the eDrive20 M Sport is equipped as standard with the Driving Assistant package, which includes functions such as lane change warning, rear cross-traffic alert with brake intervention, exit warning out, rear collision prevention and automatic emergency braking.

Interestingly, customers can get the xDrive30 M Sport’s Driving Assistant Plus package as an on-demand feature via the Connected Drive store. A quick check on the said store shows that Driving Assistant Plus is available as a subscription (RM167.55/month, RM1,675.51/year, RM2,606.35/three years) or as an unlimited plan ( without subscription) for RM3,273.36 – there’s also a free three-month trial.

With the Driving Assistant Plus package, you get access to Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Speed Limit Information, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Lane Departure Warning as well as Adaptive Cruise Control With stop and go function. Parking Assist Plus is standard on the eDrive20 and includes a 360-degree camera and Reverse Assist.

Every purchase comes with an eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty, BMW roadside assistance and accident hotline, and BMW Service Online. With a lower price, less power but more range and a relatively similar accessories list, would you choose the eDrive20 M Sport over the more expensive xDrive30 M Sport?
