Jaime Munguia and Jermall Charlo draw closer to complete the battle agreement

Jaime Munguia thought long and hard about his next move.

The former junior middleweight player turned high-middleweight contender was initially ordered to face WBO sanction to face Janibek Alimkhanuly for the 160-pound interim crown. However, as first reported by BoxingScene.com, Munguia turned down the regulator’s offer as he mulled over another proposal.

With WBC middleweight boxer Jermall Charlo in need of a dance partner, the longtime defending champion has made a tempting offer to Munguia. According to Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com, the expected date is June 18, which is the reported target.

As Munguia continues to consider Charlo’s offer, he appears to have removed himself from the WBO’s path. Finally, while Munguia will always hold a special place in the hearts of sanctioning authorities, Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel, the organization’s president, continues.

Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel said on his social media account: “We love our former junior middleweight champion, Jaime Munguia. “But the show must go on.”

Finally, a decision from Munguia could be made in the coming days. If the Mexican star accepts Charlo’s offer, the game against the Houston-born will represent his toughest rivalry to date.

Since dropping the previously mentioned WBO middleweight title, Munguia has gradually raised its competitive edge. After two one-way wins over Kamil Szeremeta and Gabe Rosado in 2021, Munguia continued her winning streak with a third-round win over D’Mitrius Ballard in February, earlier this year.

In Charlo’s case, unlike Munguia, his ring appearances so far are few and far between. In both 2020 and 2021, Charlo defended his WBC belt just once per year.

Despite his inactive schedule, Charlo managed to equalize victories over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Juan Macias Montiel – in a big showdown with British weight star Canelo Alvarez.

However, with Alvarez choosing to do business elsewhere, Charlo has now quickly turned his attention to Munguia. If the two go public on June 18, it will mark a full year since Charlo was last seen in the ring. The 31-year-old successfully defended her WBC crown against a tougher-than-expected Montiel, winning in a decision that was broadly unanimous.
