The world’s busiest airport is Atlanta, again

Once again – and perhaps unsurprisingly – Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world.

In 2022, about 93.7 million people traveled through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), passenger traffic increased by 23.8% from 2021, according to a report published by Airport Council International.

Atlanta was the busiest airport for 22 consecutive years until it lost its title to China’s Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) in 2020 due to the pandemic. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, Chinese airports accounted for 7 of the top 10 rankings.

However, Atlanta has regained its status as the world’s busiest airport in 2021.

Similar to 2021, US airports dominate this year’s ranking, accounting for half of ACI’s list. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Denver International Airport (DEN) took second and third place, respectively.

Dallas Fort Worth received about 73 million passengers last year, while Denver had 69 million passengers. The other two US airports on the list are Chicago’s O’Hare . International Airport (ORD), ranked 4th and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), at number 6 on the list.

U.S. airports have dominated the ACI rankings for the past two years due to a faster recovery in domestic tourist arrivals than in other regions.

However, international airports took the place by 2022, accounting for half of the top 10. Last year, US airports accounted for eight of the 10 spots in the ACI report.

London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), Dubai International Airport (DBX), Istanbul Airport (IST), Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) also made the list, marking a recovery in international tourism, which has largely lagged behind domestic tourism.

“While U.S. airport hubs may recover faster thanks to their strong domestic market, we are now seeing,” said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, general manager of ACI World. Global hubs move higher.

Travel is still catching up to pre-pandemic levels, but US airline CEOs predict that travel demand will continue to grow strongly into 2023. The only airport on the list with many passengers. more in 2022 than in 2019 is Denver.

Mr de Oliveira added: “While we continue to move forward cautiously amid numerous headwinds that could affect the speed and extent of global air traffic recovery, the new rankings represents an important milestone in reaching pre-pandemic levels.”
