King Charles III becomes the latest monarch to accept the patronage of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews
The oldest person ever to be crowned king of England has joined the world’s oldest golf club. King Charles III has accepted the patronage of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews following in the footsteps of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Patronage was accepted by the reigning monarchs from the 1830s.

Founded in 1754, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has grown from a small society into a global club comprising around 2,500 members, of which the king is now one. there.
Today, the club has five goals:
- Become a members’ golf club, have a clubhouse with high quality facilities and have access to first class golf facilities for play, including competitions and matches, and organize Hold two meetings of members in the Spring and Fall
- To maintain St Andrews’ position as the home of golf and to assist the Trustees and Management Committee of the St Andrews Links Trust in developing suitable golf facilities
- Provide temporary accommodation for Club members and others
- Collect and preserve records and artifacts related to the history of golf, directly or indirectly
- Through its members, to contribute to the work of the R&A in its Governance, Championships and Golf Development roles
