Techart’s new TZG-01 adapter lets you attach Contax G-mount lenses to Nikon Z-mount cameras: Digital photography review

Techart has announced its new TZG-01 adapter, Nikon’s first Contax G-to-Z-mount autofocus lens adapter. Nikon Z owners can now purchase critically acclaimed G-Contax-mount lenses designed for Contax’s G1 and G2 rangefinders in the mid-90s.

This new TZG-01 adapter is based on the same Techart design used for the TA-GA3 Contax G autofocus adapter for Sony E-mount that it released in 2014. Techart says the adapter The TZG-01 is made of aluminum and copper alloy and features a new 32-bit ARM CPU for autofocus and metadata information transfer. The transducer includes an internal block to minimize light penetration.

An AF motor built into the adapter drives the screw AF system on Carl Zeiss G-mount lenses and operates in both AF-S and AF-C shooting modes, in addition to manual focus, which is controlled by a small rotary knob on the side of the adapter. Techart says the converter fully supports in-body image stabilization (IBIS) as well as all AF modes, including dynamic-area AF, auto-area AF, and single-point AF. All of these functions will also work while recording video, according to Techart.

Here is the full list of lenses that Techart says are supported by the adapter:

  • Carl Zeiss T* Biogon 21mm F2.8 . Lens
  • Carl Zeiss T* Biogon 28mm F2.8 . Lens
  • Carl Zeiss T Lens * Flat 35mm F2
  • Carl Zeiss T Lens * Flat 45mm F2
  • Carl Zeiss T * Sonnar 90mm F2.8
  • Carl Zeiss T * Vario Sonnar 35–70mm F3.5–5.6

The adapter has a built-in Micro USB port for firmware updates and weighs only 119g (4.2 oz). As always, there are a few precautions that Techart says you should keep in mind when shooting with an adapter. First, if shooting video, wide-area AF and dynamic-area AF take precedence. Also, focusing performance is best when the aperture of the lens is set to its widest and you’ll want to make sure that the camera is turned off before switching lenses on the adapter, or else the adapter may not work properly. may temporarily freeze until you turn it off and back on your camera again.

The adapter is currently available for purchase for $299. All purchases from the Techart online store are covered by a one-year warranty.
