Stephan Malinowski wins the 2022 German Non-Fiction Prize for the book “Die Hohenzollern und die Nazis. Geschichte einer Kollaboration”
The winner of the 2022 German Non-Fiction Prize is Stephan Malinowski for his book “Die Hohenzollern und die Nazis. Geschichte einer Kollaboration” (“Hohenzollern and Nazi Germany. History of a Cooperation”) (Propyläen).
Jury statement:
“Who decides how we read the past? Stephan Malinowski has written an excellently researched and brilliantly narrative book on the role of the Hohenzollerns since 1918. Malinowski’s answer to the question of whether the ruling family supported and abetted the Nazis or not: in building the ‘Third Reich’, the Hohenzollern dynasty and the Nazi movement forged a symbolic-political alliance. The book combines contemporary social and political history with family portraits, as well as an excellent study of a conservative and right-wing faction and its hostility towards the Republic. It stands out for its rigorous argument and commanding knowledge of its sources. Malinowski offers a convincing response to Hohenzollerns’ claims of restitution while also defending academic freedom from forces opposing it. “

Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (The Book Culture and Promotion Organization of the Association of German Booksellers and Publishers) is presenting the German Non-Fiction Prize 2022 to recognize non-fiction book of the year. , a brilliant work written in German that inspires social debate. The main backer of the German Non-Fiction Prize is the Deutsche Bank Stiftung (Deutsche Bank Foundation). The Stiftung Humboldt im Berliner Schloss Forum (Organizing the Humboldt Forum in Berlin Palace) also supported the award.
