Auroral potential in Washington state tonight
Look north tonight, you might see the aurora borealis!
The sky outside was relatively clear, as shown by satellite imagery visible around 6 p.m.
A significant solar CME event resulted in particles reaching Earth’s orbit today. As shown on the NOAA Space Weather Center graphic, the Kp index has reached 8 and will be quite high tonight.
The figure below illustrates the auroral intensity and southward range increasing with Kp. When it got around 5 o’clock, I started looking in Puget Sound!
In fact, tracking of ejections from the sun shows that the impulse will reach our orbit tonight, just after dark.
This is how intense the aurora is predicted to be tonight. I am encouraged.
If you can’t get outside, the next best thing is to check out the sensitive sky cameras at Skunk Bay Weather found here: https://www.skunkbayweather.com/SkunkBayWebcam.html
