Rinaldi heads the opening of WorldSBK practice in Mandalika
MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship 2023
Round Two – Mandalika, Indonesia
World Superbike FP1
For the inaugural World Superbike practice session, the track temperature was 43 degrees and the ambient temperature was 31 degrees. By the end of this afternoon, FP2’s tracking temperature could reach and possibly even exceed 60 degrees. This morning the track was very dirty and hard to find.
Loris Baz fell ten minutes into the session but was still able to return to the hole. Just minutes later, Iker Lecuona went down a little harder at the age of 16 and had to walk back to the pit. A few rounds later, Lorenzo Baldassari joined FP1 collision club with a fall on the sixth inning and then Michael Rinaldi fell on the tenth in just under 20 minutes into the session.
Many riders waited their time before heading out, waiting for the track to be clean and some of the rubber to be damaged. After 20 minutes of the session, many riders turned, including Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes.
In fact, Rea didn’t come out of the pit lane until just 18 minutes into a 45-minute session. At that time, Toprak Razgatlioglu led the way for Alvaro Bautista and Remy Gardner.
Michael Rinaldi recovered from an early fall to top the session with a 1m34,613 to push Razgatlioglu back to P2 and Alvaro Bautista to P3. It was three seconds behind the column record and 2.5 seconds behind the lap record, both of which were set here last year.
Jonathan Rea made only six laps but was fast enough to get ahead of P4 against Xavi Vierge and Remy Gardner.
