A new effort to reduce underwater noise and protect whales in the Pacific Northwest has achieved resounding success.
The “”quiet soundThe project has begun a “reduction test” of commercial vessel traffic north of Puget Sound—an impressive 61% of vessels have volunteered to participate. Sustainable Maritime Trade Group Washington blue partnered with the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma to advance the pilot program.
Organizers hope to increase participation rates through corporate outreach. In addition, Quiet Sound can be extended through the innovative “Whale Reporting Alert System” and more underwater stethoscopes installed.
