Ontario’s Buy Mare Program Receives Extra Funds


Ontario Racing’s Thoroughbred Improvement Program Committee approved an additional $200,000 for its innovative Mare Purchase Program, bringing the total to $700,000. The enthusiastic response from Ontario breeders to the program has nearly exhausted the initial commitment of $500,000.

The January all-ages sale at Keeneland will begin in the coming days and the commission wants to give more Ontario breeders the opportunity to maximize their investment on sale.

“The main focus of this program is to give Ontario horse breeders the opportunity to buy,” said David Anderson, breeder representative at the Ontario Racing Council and member of the Thoroughbred Improvement Program Committee. a better mare and a higher quality herd. “There are people who still want to buy horses, and this will help them.”

Ontario residents purchasing broodstock are eligible for a 50% refund of the purchase price up to a maximum of $25,000.

Mares must be purchased with a minimum purchase price of US$10,000, with no maximum limit, and purchased at a public auction accredited by Ontario Racing. There is a maximum distribution of CA$75,000 to any individual, partnership, corporation or other ownership group.

“This is one of the best breeding programs in North America and the world. We want more people to know about it and participate in it,” Anderson said.

The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and buyers must submit an application within 30 days of purchase. Breeders interested in accessing this funding can download an application here.

Mares must meet the criteria of the Mare Residency Program. Copies of the registration and receipts paid from the recognized purchase from which the ponies were purchased, are also required.

Breeders are also eligible for an incentive of C$2,500 for all registered mares, which are then bred into registered Ontario studs in 2022.
In addition to the Keeneland Sale, the remaining public auctions are recognized by Ontario Racing as the OBS Winter Mixed Sale and the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale.
