MG reveals the concept of a wild electric supercar

MG is returning to the sports car game this year with Cybersterand in a nod to its sporting past, the company has revealed a wild electric supercar concept.

Launched live at the Beijing auto show, EXE181 concept is inspired by the EX181 – also known as the Roaring Raindrop – which set a land speed record of 410.5km/h in 1959.

Designed at MG’s London Advanced Design Centre, the EXE181 has a drag coefficient of just 0.181.

MG says it is aiming for a top speed of 415km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of less than a second.

Although its name is only one letter different from the record-setting EX181, the EXE181 looks very different.

It’s obviously still aerodynamic, but the body is lower and flatter with an elongated rear end.

The wheels sit under prominent bulges, while there’s a single-seat cockpit. The driver grips the steering wheel tightly.

Following its reveal in Beijing, MG plans to take the EXE181 to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, although the company has not announced any specifications for the streamlined model.

Original EX181 uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and a heavily modified MG A chassis.

Racer Phil Hill set a speed record of 410.5km/h at Bonneville Salt Flats in the US state of Utah in 1959. The car held this record until 2014 when it was finally overthrown by Bugatti.
