Pre-Preakness Party an Important Fundraiser for TAA

A pre-race party for America’s 2022 best car race to benefit the Purebred Aftercare Alliance and Beyond The Wire will be held on May 18 and open to industry members and fans. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to Thoroughbred aftercare. BloodHorse spoke with TAA operations advisor Stacie Clark-Rogers about the event, which has become a major fundraiser for TAA.

BloodHorse: The annual Pre-Preakness Party has been on hiatus for two years due to COVID-19. Talk about your expectations and your excitement when the event returns.

Stacie Clark-Rogers: It’s super awesome. America’s Best Racing has always supported the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and always has. We wanted the opportunity to bring everyone in the industry together and keep moving forward with awareness and fun things like the ABR party. Pub Mt. Washington has always been a great space and they are really generous. This is just a really fun event to get everyone together and there are some friendly jokes going on over Preakness weekend, which is always a great weekend for TAA.

It was a good way for us to kick off the week and see some familiar faces again. Coming after COVID-19, hopefully it will be more special to meet friends and have the opportunity to raise awareness and raise funds from the silent auction.

BH: This is one of the larger events that the TAA relies on every year. What makes this event important to TAA?

Registration for

SR: ABR is about fans and awareness. They are always in favor of getting the message into the industry and getting the aftercare of the organizations. Plus, we’re at one of the biggest events of the year, The Triple Crown. We get great support from Breeders’ Cups, Preakness and Pegasus, but it’s been a pleasure to participate in larger events to show the industry as well as industry advocates and fans that the service Aftercare is an integral part of the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry. Having a location doesn’t cost the event organizer too much and having sponsors cover some of the costs helps to raise awareness and joy of doing the event.

We’re having a silent auction, wire donations, and all sorts of fun stuff. It’s a good place for people to intermingle and talk about aftercare. This year, we’re featuring six athletes with disabilities making their picks for Preakness and Black-Eyed Susan (G2). They’ll board or an old fashioned tote system and some of them will be there to discuss their options if they want to and just to have a good time with their friends.

BH: All events aside, what’s your favorite part of the Pre-Spawn Party?

SR: Meeting people and anticipating the weekend Preakness is my favorite. It is located right in the middle of the Triple Crown. Maryland has always been a lovely place to be. Food at Mt. Washington Tavern is great. My favorite part is having a positive experience and awareness-raising opportunity for TAA and its organizations. Having the opportunity to alternate and have fun is a great way to kick off the weekend.

BH: How can fans support the cause?

SR: I think it’s important to know that we do two things: recognition and fundraising. Fundraising is always important. We raise funds for 82 organizations, so it’s great for fans who support horses they’ve been fans of the breed to come in after looking after to help them find work.

As a sport, it’s nice to know that we can develop horses into new careers and that we’ve made a conscious effort to do so as an industry.

BH: Tell us a little bit about Beyond The Wire and what they’ve done to help purebreds in Maryland.

SR: Beyond The Wire is one of many placement programs (we support) around the country. BTW is an arrangement program for Maryland horsemen and they are a subgroup of the horsemen group there. They are associated with getting horses off the track and into TAA-accredited facilities. We work together in perceiving, organizing and discussing issues.

We strive to ensure that we are all aware of the opportunities in the race and aftercare and ensure that the horses that land first safely through that placement program into the designated groups. TAA recognized.

BH: Can you talk a little bit about TAA’s mission and goals for this year?

SR: Mission is ongoing. To raise funds for post-accreditation care, take horses through rehab and retrain for adoption, or some horses are not adopted and kept on the reserve. What is happening is post-accreditation care support. We know that the organizations we have across the country are doing great. We raise funds for 82 groups and we recognize 82 groups. Every year we recognize new groups. It is on an ongoing mission to support the industry with the herd and help them find a good home after their previous careers have been completed.

The Pre-Preakness Party will be held on May 18 at 7:00 p.m. ET at Mt. Washington Tavern; 5700 Newbury St., Baltimore, MD 21209. The cost of attendance is $25 Online or $35 at the door.
