One New York City police officer has died and another is in critical condition following a shooting in Harlem on Friday, officials said. One suspect is also dead.
The NYPD said the officer died at Harem Hospital. A press conference is scheduled for late Friday.
Officers responded to a domestic violence call in Harlem involving a mother and her son, NBC New York reported.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams . Spokesperson confirmed on Twitter that two officers were shot.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted that her hearts are with the two officers and their families, the NYPD and Harlem. She said her office is ready to provide any assistance needed.
These officers are the fourth and fifth NYPD officers shot so far this year. The remaining three survived.
On Thursday, a police detective was shot on Staten Island as police served a drug investigation order; on January 18, an officer was stabbed in the leg in the Bronx while battling an armed suspect; and early January 1, a duty officer was shot while sleeping in his car in the middle of a shift, officials said.
Mayor, former NYPD captain elected in november, ran for office on promises to control crime and make cities safer, including cracking down on gun violence. Spokesman Fabien Levy said he was at a Harlem hospital to receive a full press conference.
